c. Starter Removal
1. Remove engine side battery box cover (1). Remove
wing nuts (2) and carriage bolts (3) and set cover
and mounting hardware aside for later re-assembly.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (4) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
engine side battery box.
3. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (5) at the bottom of
the battery equalizer (6).

4. Label and disconnect the positive (+) battery
cable (7) and starter terminal (8). Leave the wires
connected to the starter terminal.
5. Label and disconnect the blue wire (9) from the
starter solenoid housing stud and white wire from
the boot connection (10) on top of the starter. Note
how the wires are installed for ease of installation
later.

6. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, the three fasteners
securing the starter to the flywheel housing. Support
the starter securely, as it is relatively heavy and will
fall if not supported.
7. Support the starter and remove the fasteners
securing the starter to the engine. Label and remove
the wires connected to the bottom starter mounting
bolt (11). Label and remove the negative (-) ground
cable from the top starter mounting bolt (12).
8. Remove the starter (13) from the vehicle.
d. Starter Cleaning and Drying
1. While the starter is out, wipe away any grease or dirt
that has accumulated around the starter mounting
opening.
2. If reinstalling the starter, clean the exterior of the
starter with an approved solvent. DO NOT submerse
the starter or allow the solvent to contact the starter
bushings.
3. Dry the starter with a clean, lint-free cloth.
e. Starter Periodic Maintenance

A starter requires no routine maintenance beyond the oc-
casional inspection of the electrical connections, which
must be clean and tight. The starter is not serviceable; re-
place a defective starter with a new unit.

Starter Installation
1. Position the starter (13) in its mounting opening on
the flywheel housing. Secure the starter with three
fasteners. Position the ground cable over the top
starter mounting bolt (12). Position cables, labeled
for the bottom starter mounting, over the bottom

starter mounting bolt (11). Torque hex nuts to 3.4 lb/
ft (4,6 Nm) and torque capscrews to 32 lb/ft (43 Nm).
2. Connect the white wire to the boot connection (10)
on top of the starter and blue wire (9) to the starter
solenoid stud.
3. Connect the negative (-) battery cable (4) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
engine side battery box.

4. Connect the negative (-) battery equalizer cable (5)
at the bottom of the battery equalizer (6). Torque the
nut to a maximum of 100 lbs/in (11 Nm).
5. Replace battery box cover (1). Use the wing nuts (2)
and carriage bolts (3) to secure the cover in place.
