10.12.12 Load Moment Indicator (LMI)

a. LMI Description
The LMI is intended for continuously monitoring the lon-
gitudinal load moment effect of the front fork load on the
vehicle, by measuring the load on the rear axle.
It must be emphasized that the system is generally used
to indicate forward stability and will not necessarily warn
of sideways tipover.
The load sensor/transducer is mounted on the right rear
axle bridge casting, and the load indicator display (12) is
mounted inside the cab on the right side of the dash. The
display has a vertical arrangement of five LEDs three
green (13), one amber (14), and one red (15). The LEDs
progressively light to indicate the percentage of safe
working load (SWL) being carried.
When the vehicle ignition is first turned ON (and carrying
no load), the Load Indicator display will show only the
green "POWER ON" LED (16). See the table below for
the % of SWL for each display light.

The accuracy/repeatability of the system is typically ± 1
display LED under normal conditions. The accuracy of
the system will be affected by uneven ground, the stability
system cylinder being locked, or having the steering at
full lock. Larger changes in the display may be seen in
these conditions.
When the display has reached "100%" (all green lights,
plus amber light flashing) then the vehicle is carrying its
maximum SWL, as indicated on the vehicle's load chart.
The red light plus the audible alarm represents 108%
SWL and greater, so there is no further visual or audible
change from there on to the "tip up condition." In this red
range the driver should act to minimize the instability, by
retracting the load.
Each day, the Load Moment Indicator System should be
tested by pressing the TEST (17) button. This will cause
all lights to flash on, and the audible warning to sound.
The TEST button can also be pressed at any time during
operation.
The display has a mute/dim facility, which allows the driv-
er to set the level of brightness and sound level of the
alarm. The four possible combinations are selected by
holding the TEST button continuously while the display
sequences through each combination. Release the TEST
button to select when the preferred combination occurs.
The combinations are:
• Full brightness/Full volume
13
• Full brightness/Muted volume
• Dim brightness/Full volume
• Dim brightness/Muted volume
