Transmission Installation

WARNING:
injury. NEVER lift a transmission alone; enlist
the help of at least one assistant or use a suit-
able hoist or overhead crane and sling.
WARNING:
be properly installed using fasteners of the cor-
rect size and grade, and torqued to their speci-
fied value.
1. Clean all mating surfaces on both the engine and the
transmission prior to assembly.
2. Temporarily thread two M10 x 1,5 x 63,5 mm guide
studs (1) into the engine flywheel housing. These will
be used as alignment dowels.
3. Use a hoist or overhead crane and sling attached to
the lifting eye (2) at the top of the transmission.
Raise and position the transmission within the
chassis.
4. Position the transmission onto the two guide
studs (1).
5. Begin securing the transmission to the flywheel
housing with twelve M10 x 1,5 x 45 mm capscrews
(3) and M10 lockwashers (4). Remove the two guide
studs (dowels) after several capscrews and washers
are installed. When installing the washers and
capscrews, tighten bolts evenly in stages and assure
that the transmission converter housing installs
evenly against the engine flywheel housing.
Note: If the transmission is not aligned properly with the
engine, the torque converter will angle against the drive
plate and damage will occur when the engine is started.

6. Working through the engine flywheel inspection and
access hole, rotate and align a flywheel screw hole
with a transmission diaphragm plate hole. Install four
M10 x 1,5 x 25 mm capscrews (5) securing the
converter diaphragms to the engine flywheel. Insert
an engine barring tool (such as a Blue Point p/n YA
95655) into the access hole (6) in the flywheel
housing to prevent the flywheel from turning while
installing the capscrews.
7. Use the engine barring tool to advance the flywheel
to the next diaphragm plate screw hole. Continue
installing and partially tightening the remaining
capscrews and washers and rotating the flywheel
and diaphragm plate. Once all the capscrews have
been installed, tighten the capscrews.
8. Install the rubber plug in the flywheel housing access
hole.
9. Remove the hoist or overhead crane and sling.
