Fuel Shutoff Solenoid

The fuel shutoff solenoid (19), located on the rear of the
fuel injection pump is a solenoid that lets fuel enter the in-
jection pump when the ignition switch is turned to the
START or RUN positions. The fuel shutoff solenoid is
connected to mechanical linkage.

a. Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Test
1. Disconnect the wiring connector at the fuel shutoff
solenoid lead (20).
2. Energize the fuel shutoff solenoid using a 24-volt DC
source. Connect the (+) POSITIVE lead of the
24-volt DC source to the white wire in the fuel shutoff
solenoid connector and the (-) NEGATIVE lead of
the 24-volt DC source to a good ground. Watch for
the solenoid plunger to retract. If the plunger does
not retract, replace the fuel shutoff solenoid with a
new part.

3. Refer to the following table for a resistance check,
with an ohmmeter, between specified wires. DO
NOT apply any type of voltage source when
performing the following resistance checks.
Wires Tested:
White Wire to Black Wire (Pull Coil)
Red Wire to Black Wire (Hold Coil)
b. Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Removal
1. Remove engine side battery box cover (16). Remove
20
wing nuts (17) and carriage bolts (18) and set cover
and mounting hardware aside for later re-assembly.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (13) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
engine side battery box.
3. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (14) at the bottom
of the battery equalizer (15).
4. Remove the fuel shutoff solenoid (19) from the fuel
injector pump.
5. Remove the two bolts securing the solenoid to the
MS16902
mounting plate. Remove the nut holding the linkage
to the arm on the fuel injection pump. Save the
hardware for later re-use.
c. Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Disassembly
DO NOT disassemble a fuel shutoff solenoid. Replace a
defective fuel shutoff solenoid with a new part.
d. Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Installation
1. Clean the exterior of the fuel injector pump.
2. Using the hardware removed earlier, install the nut
holding the linkage to the arm on the fuel injection
pump. Install the two bolts to secure the solenoid to
the mounting plate.
3. Connect the wiring connector at the fuel shutoff
solenoid lead (20).
