When the transmission fluid temperature rises above
250° F (121° C), the sender heats up, closing contacts
within the sending unit. The operator's display panel indi-
cator (13) illuminates and an audible alarm will sound.
When the transmission temperature is below 250° F
(121° C), the contacts within the sending unit open and
the operator's display panel indicator and alarm turn
OFF. (Refer to Section 10.9.2, Transmission Tempera-
ture Warning Indicator Troubleshooting .)

a. Transmission Temperature Sender Removal
1. Remove engine side battery box cover (10). Remove
wing nuts (11) and carriage bolts (12) and set cover
and mounting hardware aside for later re-assembly.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (7) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
engine side battery box.
3. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (8) at the bottom of
the battery equalizer (9).
4. Unplug the sender connector (6) from the wiring
harness connector.
5. The sender (4) is threaded into the transmission
housing or case (5). Remove the sender.

b. Transmission Temperature Sender Disassembly
DO NOT disassemble the sender. Replace a defective or
faulty sender with a new one.
c. Transmission Temperature Sender Inspection
and Replacement
Inspect the sender and the wiring harness connector
terminals for continuity. Replace a defective or faulty
sender.
d. Transmission Temperature Sender Installation
and Testing
1. Thread the sender (4) into the transmission
housing (5) snugly, then connect the sender
connector (6) to the wiring harness connector.
2. Connect the negative (-) battery cable (7) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
MM1881
engine side battery box.
3. Connect the negative (-) battery equalizer cable (8)
at the bottom of the battery equalizer (9). Torque the
nut to a maximum of 100 lbs/in (11 Nm).
4. Replace engine side battery box cover (10). Use the
wing nuts (11) and carriage bolts (12) to secure the
cover in place.
5. Clear the area around the vehicle of personnel and
any obstructions to vehicle travel.
6. Start the engine, allow all systems to reach
operating temperature, and observe the operator's
display panel for sender indication. If the sender is
not defective, the problem could be elsewhere;
possibly in a shorted wire, clogged or defective
transmission cooler, defective display, etc.
