10.13 SWITCHES AND SOLENOIDS

10.13.1

Ignition Switch

The ignition switch (1) is located on the lower left side of
the dash. It is a key-operated switch used to start the en-
gine and to run the vehicle.

The ignition switch (2) is turned clockwise from the
OFF (3) position to the RUN (4) position and then pushed
in and turned to the START (5) position. The START po-
sition is spring-loaded to return the switch to the RUN (4)
position. The START (5) position must be momentarily
held in place for normal starting and for ether to be inject-
ed into the cylinders.

In the OFF position (3) the entire electrical system is shut
down, with power at the ignition switch and the starter
solenoid only.

In the RUN position (4), all controls and indicators are
operable.
When the parking brake switch is ON and the
transmission is in NEUTRAL [N], pushing and turning the
ignition switch to the START position (5) engages the
starter to start the engine and injects ether into the
cylinders.
a. Ignition Switch Removal
1. Remove engine side battery box cover (9). Remove
wing nuts (10) and carriage bolts (11) and set cover
and mounting hardware aside for later re-assembly.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (6) at the
battery negative (-) terminal on the battery in the
engine side battery box.
3. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (7) at the bottom of
the battery equalizer (8).
4. Remove the three self-drilling screws (6) (one screw
is not visible in figure) securing the lower dash
cover (7) to the front dash (8). Remove the lower
dash cover (7).
