Service
Engine disassembly, internal inspection, service, repair
and assembly procedures are covered in the Cummins
4BTA 3.9 service manual. Several special engine service
tools are required to properly service the Cummins en-
gine. Contact the local Cummins parts distributor for fur-
ther information.

Note: If the engine is being replaced and depending
upon who you purchase the new engine from and the
configuration of your replacement engine, there may be
external components that will be required to be trans-
ferred from the original engine to the replacement
engine. Refer to the appropriate Cummins user manual
for detailed procedures that cover the transfer of original
engine components to the replacement engine.

IMPORTANT: When re-installing the air conditioning
compressor kit to the new engine, make sure to check

the belt tension midway (18) between the fan pulley (19)
and the pulley on the compressor (20). Deflection should
be 3/16" (4,8 mm) with an applied force of 5-1/2 lb
21
(2,5 kg).

IMPORTANT: When the engine is re-installed into the
vehicle, the air conditioning hoses (21 and 22) need to
20
be re-installed to the air conditioning compressor (23).
This procedure must be completed by an authorized air
conditioning service technician.
