Axles, Wheels and Tires
7. If the axle will be disassembled after removal, place
a suitable receptacle under the axle drain plug (1).
Remove the drain plug and allow the axle oil to drain
into the receptacle. Transfer the used axle oil into a
suitable covered container and label the container as
used oil. Dispose of used oil at an approved
recycling facility.
8. Label, disconnect and cap the steering and brake
lines at the axle. Wipe up any spilled oil.
9. Rear axle only: Remove the cover from the LMI
sender on the right side "beam" of the axle.
Disconnect the pigtail on the sender from the wire
harness.
10. Block the front and rear of both tires on the axle that
is not being removed. Ensure that the vehicle will
remain in place during axle removal before
proceeding.
11. Raise the vehicle using a suitable jack or hoist.
Place suitable supports under both sides of the
frame and lower the vehicle onto the supports.
Ensure that the vehicle will remain in place during
axle removal.
12. Support the axle that is being removed with a suitable
jack, hoist or overhead crane and sling. DO NOT
raise the axle or the vehicle.
13. Mark and remove both wheel and tire assemblies
from the axle that is being removed.

14. The drive shaft assembly is a balanced assembly.
Mark the yoke and axle, transmission, transfer case,
and the shaft and slip yoke so that these components
can be returned to their original positions when
reinstalled. Yokes at both ends of the drive shaft
must be in the same plane to help prevent excessive
vibration.
15. Remove the four capscrews (2) and straps (3)
securing the bearing crosses to the transfer case (4).
16. Remove the four capscrews (5) and straps (6)
securing the bearing crosses to the axle (7).
17. Remove the drive shaft assembly (8).

18. Remove the capscrew (9) and elastic locknut (10)
securing the lower position cylinder-mount pin (11)
to the cylinder (12-Front or 13-Rear). Tap the
cylinder mount pin out, and move the cylinder to
prevent it from interfering with axle removal.
19. Remove the four capscrews (14-Front or 15-Rear),
elastic locknuts (16), and lockwashers (17) securing
the front and rear axle supports (rotating trunnions)
(18) to the vehicle frame.
20. Remove the axle (19-Front or 20-Rear), from the
vehicle using the jack, hoist or overhead crane and
sling supporting the axle. DO NOT raise or otherwise
disturb the vehicle while removing the axle. Balance
the axle and prevent it from tipping, turning or falling
while removing it from beneath the vehicle. Place the
axle on a suitable support or holding stand.
