6. INSTALL STARTING HOUSING
(a) Place the starter housing on
tile
magnetic a w itch and
install two screws.
(b) Install two through bolts .
(el Connect the coil lead to the terminal on the magnetic
switch.
PERFORMANCE TEST OF REDUCTION TYPE
STARTER
1.
CAUTION: TheM tests mutt be performed whhln 3 to S
seconds to .void buming out tile coil.
PERFORM PULL-IN TEST
(al Disconnect the field coil lead from terminal C.
(b) Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown.
Cheek that the plunger moves outward .
If the plunger does not move, replace the magnetic
sw~ch.
2. PERFORM HOLO-IN TEST
While connected as above with the plunger out, discon·
neet the negative lead from terminal C. Check that the plun-
ger remains out.
If the plunger retums inward, replace the megnetie switch.
3. CHECK PlUNGER RETURN
Disconnect the negative lead f rom the swit ch body. Cheek
that the plunger returns inward.
If the plunger does not retum, replace the magnetic switch.
4 . PERFORM NO-LOAD PERFORMANCE TEST
(al Connect the battery and ammeter to the starter as
shown.
(b) Cheek that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily
with the pinion moving out. Cheek that the ammeter
reads the specified current.
