SNI STARTING SYSTEM - Starter

2. CHECK THAT FIELD COlliS NOT GROUNDED
Using an ohmmeter, chock for continuity between the field
coil end and field frame.
If
there is continuity, repair o r
replace the field f rame.
Brushes
MEASURE BRUSH LENGTH
Standard length: 16.6 mm (0.610 in.l
Minimum length: 10 mm (0.39 l n.)
If length is less than minimum, replace the brush or dress
w ith
emery
cloth.
Brush Springs
MEASURE BRUSH SPRING LOAD WITH A PULL SCALE
Tension:
1,786 - 2,41 6 11 (3 .9 - 5.3

If the reading is below standard. replace the bruoh spring.
NOTE: Take the pull scale reading the instant the brush
spring separates from the brush.
Brush Holder
CHECK INSULATION OF BRUSH HOLDER
Using an ohmmater. check for continuity between the posi-
t ive and negative brush holders.
If there is continuity, repair or replace the brush holder.
Clutch and Gears
1 . INSPECT GEAR TEETH
Inspect the gear teeth on the pin ion gear, idler gear and
clutch assembly for wear or damage. Repl ace if damaged.
If damaged, also inspect the flywheel ring gear for w ear
or damage.
2. CHECK CLUTCH
Rotate the pinion clockwise and check that it turns freely.

Try to rotate the pinion counterclockwise and check that
it locks.
