SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
In the 912 i Series engine, 4 cylinders with "GIL-
NISIL"-coated running surfaces are used. The
pistons are light alloy full skirt pistons. The piston
axle is axially offset by 1 mm (0.03937 in.) with
respect to the piston skirt.
SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNUNG WARNING
Danger of severe burns and scalds! Always
allow the engine to cool down to ambient tem-
perature before starting any work.
MAINTENANCE
As well as the maintenance and special checks,
see the relevant Maintenance Manual Line for
the respective 912 i Series engine type.
REMOVAL
Preparation
- Remove the cylinder head. See section
72-30-00.
CYLINDER AND PISTON - REMOVAL
Before the cylinders and pistons are re-

moved, they must be marked in pairs to
prevent confusion. The cylinders are all
identical. The pistons are axially offset!
Step
1
Put the piston in the TDC position and ap-
ply the marking arrow in the direction of
the gearbox.
NOTE:
When the piston is cleaned the
marking arrow becomes visible.
It points in the direction of the
gearbox for all four cylinders and
aids correct assembly of the axi-
ally offset piston.

Pistons and piston rings can be damaged. Sup-
port pistons by hand!

Support the piston by hand and carefully
remove the cylinder along with the O-ring.
WARNUNG WARNING
The mono hook circlip is under stress!
NOTICE
WARNUNG
Cover the crankcase!
The mono hook circlip must not fall in.

Remove the piston pin circlip with mono
hook circlip remover part no. 976380.
