3)
Switching from RPT to SPT
When a multicast router detects that the multicast packet with the destination address
of G from the RP is sent at a rate greater than the threshold, the multicast router will
send a join message to the node of a higher level toward the source S, which results in
switching from the RPT to the SPT.
III. Preparation before configuring PIM-SM
1)
Configuring candidate RP
In a PIM-SM network, multiple candidate-RPs (C-RPs) can be configured to share RP
load. Each C-RP is responsible for forwarding multicast packets with the destination
addresses in a certain range, to balance RP load. These C-RPs are equal. All multicast
routers calculate the RP for a connected multicast group by the same algorithm after
receiving the RP information reported by the BSR.
Note that one RP can service multiple multicast groups or all the multicast groups on
the network, but at a given time point each multicast group can correspond only to one
RP, rather than multiple ones.
2)
Configuring BSR
BSR, the management core of PIM-SM networks, collects and broadcasts information
about all C-RPs after they send statements to it.
There can be only one BSR in a network, but multiple candidate-BSRs (C-BSRs). Then
the network can pick up another once the existing BSR fails. The BSR is auto-elected
from those C-BSRs: The C-BSR with the highest priority becomes the BSR. If there are
several C-BSRs with the same priority in the network, then the one with the greatest IP
address is elected.
3)
Configuring static RP
RP is the kernel router for the multicast routing. If the dynamic RP elected by BSR
mechanism fails, a static RP can be configured. As the backup of dynamic RP, static RP
improves robustness and operability of the multicast network.

6.2 PIM-DM Configuration

When the router runs in the PIM-DM domain, it is recommended to enable PIM-DM on
all the interfaces of the non-border router.
Basic configuration of PIM-DM include:
Enabling multicast
Enabling PIM-DM protocol
Advanced configuration of PIM-DM include:
Configuring the interval of Hello messages
Entering PIM view
Configuring filtering multicast source (group)
