7.1.3 Service Advertising Protocol
The Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) advertises the services provided by servers
and their addresses as well. It is used by IPX to maintain and advertise dynamic service
information. With SAP, a server broadcasts its services when it starts and the
termination of the services when it goes down.
With IPX enabled, the switch creates and maintains an internetwork service information
database (or the service information table) through SAP. It helps you learn what
services are available on the networks and where they are provided. The servers
periodically broadcast their services and addresses to the networks directly connected
to them. Users cannot use such information directly, however. Instead, the information
is collected by the SAP agents of the switches on the networks and saved in their
server information tables.
7.2 IPX Configuration
I. Basic IPX configuration
Before configuring IPX, you must perform these two tasks:
Enable IPX
Assign IPX network numbers to VLAN interfaces

Configure IPX static routes
Configure an IPX route limit
Configure IPX RIP
III. IPX SAP configuration
Configure IPX SAP
IV. IPX forwarding-related configuration
Configure triggered update in IPX
Configure split horizon of IPX
Configure the encapsulation format of the IPX frame
Configure whether to forward type 20 IPX broadcast packets
7.2.1 Enable IPX
You must enable IPX before configuring other IPX parameters.
