1 SNMP Configuration

1.21 Configuring the Constant Interface Index Feature

When the interface index is used as the accounting reference, it is required that the interface
index be the same even if the interface is added or deleted, the system is restarted, and the
software or hardware configuration is changed. You can configure the constant interface index
feature to meet the preceding requirement.

1.21.1 Establishing the Configuration Task

Before configuring the constant interface index feature, familiarize yourself with the applicable
environment, complete the pre-configuration tasks, and obtain the required data. This can help
you complete the configuration task quickly and accurately.
1.21.2 Enabling the Constant Interface Index Feature
After the constant interface index feature is configured, indexes of the current interfaces and
newly-created interfaces are constant. Before restarting the switch, you need to run the save
command to save the interface configuration. Otherwise, the interface index changes after the
switch startup.
1.21.3 Setting the Maximum Number of Interfaces with Constant Indexes
As the system runs, interfaces are added or deleted frequently, generating large number of
interface index files. These files are stored in the storage device, which consumes excessive
system resources. To ensure that the interface index file is within the expected size, you can set
the maximum number of fixed indexes for the interface.
1.21.4 Setting the Memory Distribution Mode of the Sub-interface Index
The memory distribution modes of the sub-interface index can be classified into loose mode and
compact mode. Loose mode is used when the sub-interface numbering is discontinuous.
Compact mode is used when the sub-interface numbering is continuous.
1.21.5 Checking the Configuration
After the constant interface index feature is configured, you can view the configuration.
1.21.1 Establishing the Configuration Task
Before configuring the constant interface index feature, familiarize yourself with the applicable
environment, complete the pre-configuration tasks, and obtain the required data. This can help
you complete the configuration task quickly and accurately.
Applicable Environment
The interface index number (Ifindex) of SNMP identifies a physical or a logical interface. View
IfIndex attributes of each interface on the switch through the client software on the NM station.
The IfIndex of an interface is not constant. For example, restarting the switch, or changing
hardware or software configuration may change the IfIndex of the same interface.
In some applications, for example, when the interface index is used as the charging evidence,
the Ifindex should be constant and not vary when there is an addition or deletion of interfaces,
a system restart or a hardware or software configuration. Configure this feature in such a case.
The index information of the current interface is mapped to the image file in the memory after
enabling the constant interface index feature. The save command saves the image on the storage
device (such as a flash or a hard disk) to avoid any change in the interface index during system
restart.
