S p a r k P l u g I n s p e c t i o n
ENGINE
1. inspect the electrodes and ceramic insulator.
• Burned or w o r n electrodes m a y be caused by:
- A d v a n c e d ignition t i m i n g
- Loose spark plug
- Plug heat range t o o hot
- Insufficient cooling
• Fouled plug m a y be caused by:
- Retarded ignition t i m i n g
- Oil in c o m b u s t i o n chamber
- Incorrect spark plug gap
- Plug heat range t o o cold
- Excessive idling/low speed running
- Clogged air cleaner element
- Deteriorated ignition coils
Worn or deformed
electrodes
Damaged
gasket
Cracked
insulator
»Improper gap
' Oil-fouling
Carbon deposits
Cracked center
electrode insulator
2. If the spark plug electrode is dirty or contaminated,
clean the electrode w i t h a plug cleaner.
NOTE:
• Do not use a wire brush or scrape the i r i d i u m
electrode since this will damage the electrode.
• Use a chemical cleaner such as Carb Spray t o
clean contamination on the electrode.
• W h e n using a sand blaster spark plug cleaner, do
not clean for more than 20 seconds to avoid
d a m a g i n g the electrode.
3. Do not adjust the gap (A) of i r i d i u m tip plugs;
replace the spark plug if the gap is out of
specification.
Electrode Gap
Standard (New): 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in.
4. Replace the plug at the specified interval or if the
center electrode is rounded (A). Use only the spark
plugs listed.

NGK:
IZFR6K11
DENSO:SKJ20DR-M11
A p p l y a small a m o u n t of anti-seize c o m p o u n d to
the plug threads, and screw the plugs into the
cylinder head, finger-tight. Then torque t h e m to
1 8 N - m ( 1 . 8 kgf-m, 13 Ibf-ft).
