Special Tools Required
• Valve guide driver, 5.5 m m 07742-0010100
• Valve guide reamer, 5.5 m m 07HAH-PJ7A100
1 Inspect valve stem-to-guide clearance (see page
6-51).
As illustrated, use a c o m m e r c i a l l y available air-
impact valve guide driver (A) m o d i f i e d to fit the
diameter of the valve guides. In most cases, the
same procedure can be done using the special tool
and a conventional h a m m e r .

3. Select the proper replacement guides, and chill
t h e m in the freezer section of a refrigerator for
about an hour.
4. Use a hot plate or oven to evenly heat the cylinder
head to 300 °F (150 °C). M o n i t o r the temperature
w i t h a cooking t h e r m o m e t e r . Do not get the head
hotter than 300 °F (150 °C); excessive heat may
loosen the valve seats.
5. W o r k i n g f r o m the camshaft side, use the driver and
an air h a m m e r to drive the guide about 2 m m
(0.1 in.) towards the c o m b u s t i o n chamber. This will
knock off some of the carbon and make removal
easier. Hold the air h a m m e r directly in line w i t h the
valve guide to prevent d a m a g i n g the driver. Wear
safety goggles or a face shield.
6. Turn the head over, and drive the guide out t o w a r d
the camshaft side of the head.
7. If a valve guide still w o n ' t m o v e , drill it out w i t h a
8 m m (5/16 inch) bit, then try again.
NOTE: Drill guides only in extreme cases; y o u
could damage the cylinder head if the guide breaks.
8. Remove the new guide(s) f r o m the freezer, one at a
t i m e , as y o u need t h e m .
