Planetary Gear Inspection
16. Check the planetary gears (A) and ring gear (B).
Replace t h e m if they are w o r n or damaged.

Overrunning Clutch Inspection
17. Slide the o v e r r u n n i n g clutch along the shaft.
Replace it if it does not slide s m o o t h l y .
18. Rotate the o v e r r u n n i n g clutch (A) both ways. Does
it lock in one direction and rotate s m o o t h l y in
reverse? If it does not lock in either direction or it
locks in both directions, replace it.

Starter Reassembly
20. Install the armature into the housing.
2 1 . Place the brush holder assembly on the armature,
then m o v e the brush holder (A) d o w n to the
armature.
22. Install the end cover to retain the brush holder.
19. If the starter drive gear (B) is w o r n or d a m a g e d ,
replace the overrunning clutch assembly; the gear
is not available separately. Check the condition of
the idler gear and drive plate ring gear to see if the
starter drive gear teeth are d a m a g e d .
