Auto Z Zero Calibration

An Auto Z Zero Calibration is initiated by the machine automatically before each job is built
and can also be initiated by the operator. During the Auto Z Zero calibration, the machine
will automatically find the location of the top of the build sheet in the Z axis as compared to
the end of the model tip. To perform the Auto Z Zero Calibration the system first positions
the model tip in the center of the job that is being built and positions the Z stage to 0.030-in.
(0.076 cm) (with the top of the build sheet approximately 0.030-in. (0.076 cm) below the
model tip). It then makes a short diagonal XY movement at a very low torque. While making
this move the machine is monitoring for following error. Following error is the failure of a
motor to reach its commanded position, in this case following error would indicate the tip is
dragging on the build sheet. If no following error is seen the Z stage will raise 0.002-in.
(0.0508 mm) and make another diagonal XY move while monitoring for following error. The
machine will repeat this process or until a following error is seen which in turn establishes
the Z Zero value.
During an Auto Z Zero calibration 2 errors may be encountered:
Build Sheet Too Thick - Indicates the build sheet was detected on the first diagonal XY
move. If this error is displayed verify the proper build sheet is installed, perform a Manual Z
Zero calibration, and rerun the Auto Z Zero calibration.
Build Sheet Not Reached - Indicates a maximum number of checks (37) were made and the
build sheet was not detected. If this error is displayed, verify the proper build sheet is
installed, perform a Manual Z Zero calibration, and re run the Auto Z Zero calibration
Procedure
1.
Install a new build sheet and verify that vacuum is present.
2.
From the Main Menu on the operator control panel select: Operator Control > Calibrate
> Set Z Stage Zero > Auto Z Zero Calibrate. Allow the system to perform the calibration.
3.
If the calibration fails perform the Manual Z Zero Calibration. (See
