Z Guide Rod/Pillow Block Removal

Tools and Materials Required
• 9/64-inch hex key
• 3/16-inch hex key
• 5/32-inch hex key
• Krytox grease
Procedure
1.
Lower the Z stage to the bottom of its travel (Operator control > Move Head/Stage and
then select, Move Z Stage to Bottom).
2.
Power down the system. (See

Remove the side panels from the system. (See

Manually lower the Z stage to approximately 2" above the lower hard stops.
5.
Remove the eight pillow block mounting screws (9/64-inch hex key - four for each pillow
block) on the guide rod being replaced.
6.
Loosen, but do not remove, the rod end support clamp screw
(3/16-inch hex key - one for each support clamp) on the side to be replaced. (See
Figure 5-43 on page
7.
Remove the eight rod end support mounting screws (5/32-inch hex key - four for each
rod end support) on the top and bottom of the side being replaced. (See
page 5-63.)
Use care when removing the four mounting screws from the upper
rod end support. Do not allow the support to fall freely along the
guide rod.
8.
Slide the guide rod and rod end supports away from the Z stage.
9.
Remove the rod end supports from the guide rod.
10.
Remove the grease Zerk from the old bearing assemblies to be used on the new bearings.
