GEAR CASE (STANDARD ROTATION)
PROPELLER SHAFT THRUST
CLEARANCE INSPECTION
Adjust the propeller shaft thrust clearance after
inspection of the backlash.
Install the following parts except the water pump.
– Vertical shaft/forward bevel gear (page 16-28)
– Propeller shaft holder (page 16-18)
– Shift rod (page 16-16)
Check that the shift rod [1] in the gear case is in the "N"
(Neutral) position.
• The shift rod is in the "N" (Neutral) position if the
cutout [2] in the shift rod spline is in the cruising
direction [3].
Set the gear case so that the propeller shaft is in the
vertical position and secure the gear case.
Install the castle nut [1] to the propeller shaft.
Hold the propeller shaft securely with the 2 jaw puller
(commercially available) [2] as shown.
TOOLS (commercially available):
Puller, 2 jaw
Pins (2 required)
Pressure screw
Jaws
Tip
Yoke
Tighten the puller bolt to the specified torque while
turning the vertical shaft [3] five to ten turns clockwise.
• Be sure to turn the vertical shaft while maintaining
the specified torque in order to stabilize the taper
bearing in fully seated position.
TORQUE: 5 N·m (0.51 kgf·m, 3.7 lbf·ft)
Remove the 2 jaw puller.
Set the dial indicator [1] on the propeller shaft and bring
the tip of the gauge in contact with the rib of the
propeller shaft holder [2] perpendicularly.
Hold the castle nut [3] and pull the propeller shaft up in
the direction shown and note the first measurement of
the propeller shaft thrust clearance.
Thrust clearance 0.20 – 0.40 mm (0.008 – 0.016 in)
• The clearance must be measured at the first
attempt. If you pull up the shaft more than once,
measurement will be inaccurate as it affects the
relative position of taper roller bearing inner/outer
race.
• If you have to recheck the clearance, remove the
dial indicator and reinstall the special tools to
reposition the bearing races.
If the clearance is too large, increase the thrust shim
thickness and recheck the clearance.
If the clearance is too small, reduce the thrust shim
thickness and recheck the clearance.
Install the water pump (page 11-12).
After installation, inspect the gear case pressure (page
16-45)
