GEAR CASE (STANDARD ROTATION)
Turn the vertical shaft [1] five to ten turns clockwise to fit
the taper bearing.
Retighten the puller bolt to the specified torque.
TORQUE: 5 N·m (0.51 kgf·m, 3.7 lbf·ft)
Repeat the procedure several times.
Set the special tools as shown.
TOOLS:
Backlash indicator tool [1]
Backlash inspection tool set
• Adjust the dial indicator [2] so its needle is at the line
of the indicator clip [3].
• Align the backlash indicator tool with line of the base
plate [4]
Turn the vertical shaft lightly right and left and record
the dial indicator reading.
Measure the backlash at six lines of the base plate.
Turn the vertical shaft 180° and measure the backlash
in the same manner.
• Retighten the puller bolt to the specified torque
before each measurement.
• When measuring the backlash, do not turn the
propeller shaft by turning the vertical shaft.
Obtain the forward bevel gear backlash using the dial
gauge runout and the following formula.
Formula:
Backlash = Dial gauge runout ÷ 0.806
Example:
When dial gauge runout is 0.285 mm (0.0112 in),
Backlash =
0.285 mm (0.0112 in) ÷ 0.806 = 0.35 mm (0.014 in)
STANDARD VALUE:
0.30 – 0.54 mm (0.012 – 0.021 in)
If the backlash is too large compared to the standard
value, increase the forward bevel gear shim thickness
and recheck the backlash.
If the backlash is too small compared to the standard
value, reduce the forward bevel gear shim thickness
and recheck the backlash.
• Use the special tool when taper bearing (60 x 100 x
30 mm) [outer race] is removed to adjust the
backlash again.
• Inspect the reverse bevel gear backlash after
adjustment of the pinion gear shim (page 16-43).
• Inspect the propeller shaft thrust clearance after
adjustment of the forward bevel gear shim (page 16-
44).
