Wipe the tapered part [1] of the vertical shaft [2] and
pinion gear [3] with a shop towel and degreasing
cleaning solvent.
Apply gear oil to the threads and seating surface of the
pinion gear nut [4].
Install the vertical shaft and pinion gear on the gear
case, then loosely tighten the pinion gear nut.
Before installing the pinion gear, make sure that the
forward bevel gear/taper bearing is positioned in the
gear case correctly.
Apply gear oil to the threads and seat of the lock nut [5].
Install the lock nut as shown, noting the installation
direction.
Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque using the
special tool.
TOOL:
Lock nut wrench, 36 x 47.8 mm [6] 07916-MB00002
TORQUE: 132 N·m (13.5 kgf·m, 97 lbf·ft)
• Make sure the torque wrench [7] is mounted
perpendicular [8] to the special tool. If the torque
wrench is not held 90 degrees to the tool, the torque
reading will be incorrect.
Attach the special tool to the end of the vertical shaft [1]
as shown.
TOOL:
Vertical shaft holder [2]
Place a shop towel [3] in the gear case [4] as shown to
protect it.
Holding the pinion gear nut [5] as shown, turn the
vertical shaft and tighten the pinion gear nut to the
specified torque.
TORQUE: 196 N·m (20.0 kgf·m, 145 lbf·ft)
Install the propeller shaft holder (page 17-17).
