About This Book

This manual describes the capabilities, operation, and functions of the Motorola
MPC533/MPC534 microcontroller. Documentation for the modular microcontroller family
follows the modular construction of the devices in the product line. Where information in
this manual varies from information in other Motorola references, this manual takes
precedence. Please refer to "Suggested Reading" for further information.
Unless otherwise noted, references to the MPC533 also includes the MPC534. Any
functional differences between the MPC533 and MPC534 are noted. MPC534-specific
information is located in Appendix G, "MPC534 Compression Features."

Audience

This manual is intended for system software and hardware developers and applications
programmers who want to develop products for the MPC533. It is assumed that the reader
understands operating systems, and microprocessor and microcontroller system design.

Organization

Following is a summary and brief description of the major sections of this manual:
• Chapter 1, "Overview," provides an overview of the MPC533 microcontroller,
including a block diagram showing the major modular components, sections that list
the major features, and differences between the MPC533 and the MPC555. The
MPC533 and MPC534 devices are members of the Motorola MPC500 RISC
Microcontroller family.
• Chapter 2, "Signal Descriptions," describes the MPC533 microprocessor's external
signals. It contains a description of individual signals, showing their behavior, when
the signal is an input or an output, and which signals are multiplexed with other
signals.
• Chapter 3, "Central Processing Unit," describes the RISC processor (RCPU) used in
the MPC500 family of microcontrollers. It integrates five independent execution
units: an integer unit (IU), a load/store unit (LSU), a branch processing unit (BPU),
a floating-point unit (FPU) and an integer multiplier divider (IMD). The RISC's use
of simple instructions with rapid execution times yields high efficiency and
throughput for MPC500-based systems.
