seated in the locating holes in the carrier. Turn the
tool screw only finger tight at this time.
(10) Install a pilot stud, Tool C-3288 in one side of
the carrier. Attach a dial indicator and load the indi-
cator slightly against the opposite side of the carrier
(Fig. 46).
(11)
The carrier must be spread sufficiently (.012-
.015") to permit removal of the differential, but
not
over
.020 inch.
(12) Remove the dial indicator and remove the dif-
ferential assembly from the carrier. A light prying
action can be used to unseat the differential from the
carrier (Fig. 47). Identify the bearing cups and pre-
load washers for location in reassembly. Remove the
spreader tool.

(13) Remove the pinion from the carrier.
(14) Remove the pinion bearing caps with a flat end

(16) Remove the drive gear bolts.
BOLTS ARE
LEFT HAND THREAD.
Remove the drive gear.
(17) If the drive gear runout exceeded
.005
inch
in step
4,
the differential case flange runout should
be measured. Install the differential case and spacer
washer in the carrier and loosen the spreader tool.
Mount dial indicator in contact with the drive gear
side of the flange to take a reading as in steps 3, 4
and 5. Total allowable runout should not exceed .003
inch. In a case of slight runout, it may be possible
during assembly to locate the high runout section of
the drive gear, opposite (180O) from the runout sec-
tion of the case to reduce the tolerance of the assem-
bly.
(18) Drive the differential pinion shaft lock pin out
of the case from the drive gear end of case.
(19) Remove the differential shaft with a brass
drift.
(20) Rotate the axle side gear to remove the pinion
