Description
The manual steering gear (Fig. 1) is designed to pro-
vide easy steering with a minimum of friction in the
steering gear. A ball nut travels up or down on the
wormshaft, riding on recirculating balls acting as a
screw thread.
M A N U A L STEERING GEAR
The wormshaft and ball nut assembly is supported
in the gear housing by an adjustable ball thrust type
upper and lower bearing. The lower bearing cup
i s
pressed into the gear housing, and the upper bearing
cup
is
pressed into the wormshaft bearing adjuster.

Insufficient lubricant in the steering gear

Front wheels out of line.
Steering column misaligned.
Incorrect tire pressure.
Wheel bearings improperly adiusted.
Dragging brakes.
Improper caster and camber.
Incorrect toe-in.
Grease,
dirt,
oil or brake fluid on brake linings.
Front and rear wheels out of alignment.
Broken or sagging rear springs.
Bent suspension parts.
Incorrect tire pressure.
Improper balance of wheels, tires and brake
drums.
Loose tie rod ends or steering connections.
Worn or inoperative shock absorbers.
Steering gear shaft adjusted too loose or
badly worn.
Steering linkage loose or worn.
Front wheel bearings improperly adjusted.
Steering arm loose on steering gear shaft.
Steering gear housing attaching bolts loose.
Steering arms loose at steering knuckles.
Worn
ball
joints.
!nflate tires to recommended pressures.
Lubricate as necessary.
Adjust according to instructions.
Align the wheels. See "Front Suspension."

Inflate tires to recommended pressures.
See "Front Wheel Bearing Adjustment."
Inspect for weak, or broken brake shoe spring,
binding pedal.
See "Front Wheel Alignment Group."

Inspect, replace and adjust as necessary.
Align the front wheels. See "Front Suspen,sion
Group."
Replace rear springs.
Replace parts necessary.

Inflate tires to recommended pressures.
Balance as necessary. See "Wheels and Tires."
Inspect and repair as necessary.
Replace shock absorbers as necessary.
Replace worn parts and adiust according to
instructions.
Replace worn parts. See "Front Wheel Align-
ment."
Adjust according to instructions.
Inspect for damage to gear shaft and steering
arm, replace parts as necessary.
Tighten attaching bolts to torque Specifications.
Tighten according to torque specifications.
Replace ball joints as necessary.
