FUEL S Y S T E M 4 U E L TANK
Inspect
the
condition of
the
rubber grommet. If
cracked
or
deteriorated, install new grommet at
re-
assembly.
installation
Before installing the fuel tank gauge unit, inspect
the
condition of the filter on the end of the suction
tube. If the filler is corroded, install a new filter.
(1)
Position the fuel tank gauge unit in the tank,
using a new gasket. Tighten securely, using Tool
C-
3582.
(2)
Slide the hold down strap up under the quarter
panel, inserting the end of the strap into
the
slot. Al-
low the strap to hang.
(3) Install a new grommet in the tank. Refer to
(Fig. 5).
(4)
Slide
the tank up under the quarter panel with
the gauge unit facing the front of vehicle and work
up into position, then push toward the rear of vehicle
(Be sure the embossed side of the tank engages
with the embossed surface of the support). Make sure
the filler neck is aligned with the opening in the top
of the quarter panel. Hold in this position, then raise
the retaining strap and thread onto the "J" bolt. In-
stall the attaching nut. Do not tighten.

Place a new seal over the filler tube and down
against the flange. Insert the filler tube down into the
neck of the tank. Force the tube into the grommet,
until the tube contacts the seal retainer. (Be sure the
anchor tab on the tube is aligned with a screw hole.)
Install screws and tighten securely.
(6)
Tighten fuel tank hold down strap bolt to
60
inch-pounds torque.
(7)
Install the stone shield, connect the fuel line
and lead wire to the gauge unit. Reinstall the button
plugs.
(8)
Reinstall the left rear wheel.
(9)
Lower the vehicle and connect the left rear
(10) Refill the fuel tank and test for leaks.
