LEAKS
Pump belt loose.
Pump pulley loose.
Oil
level low in pump reservoir.
Pressure relief valve spring weak, or relief valve
stuck in open position.
Flow control valve stuck.
Worn pump rotor, slippers, or broken and
distorted springs.
(a) See "Group 7-Cooling."
(b)
Replace the pulley, measure the pump
shaft
diameter as follows:
.96 pump; .6872-.6876
shaft
diameter, pulley
inside diameter .6846-.6857;
1.2 pump; .8120-.8125
shaft
diameter; pulley
inside diameter .8095-.8105.
If
the shaft i s damaged replace the pump.
(c) See "Fluid Level."
(d)
Replace the relief valve and perform "Pump
Pressure Test."
(e) Repair as necessary. Refer to "Flow Control
Valve Removal and Installation.''
(f) Repair as necessary. See "Hard Steering" Cor-
rection (e).
Wrong relief valve.

(b) Replace relief valve and perform "Pump Pres-
Reservoir over-filled.
NOTE:
Operating the
steering gear manually when the engine is
not running will cause the.steering gear to
displace the fluid from the steering gear
housing which will then be forced out
of
the pump filler cap vent, giving a false in-
dication of fluid leakage.
Pressure and return hose connections and fittings.

SERVICE PROCEDURES
Fluid Level
(1)
Start the engine, turn the steering wheel back
and forth several times to expel the air from the sys-
tem, then shut off engine.
(2)
Wipe reservoir filler cap free of dirt then remove
cap and visually check the oil level in the reservoir:
Engine Cold-Oil
level should be at the bottom of
filler neck.
Engine Hot-Oil
level should be one-half way up in
filler neck.
If necessary, add only Part Number 2084329 Power
Steering Fluid to the required level. Do not overfill.
Pump Pressure Test
(1)
Test pump belt tension. See "Cooling System,"
Group
7.
(2)
Disconnect the pump to the steering gear pres-
sure hose at the power steering pump. Connect the
test hose C-3388 with the proper adapter between
power steering pump and pressure gauge C-3309B
with the shut-off valve between the pressure gauge
and the pressure hose that was disconnected from the
pump (Fig.
2).
NOTE:
Make sure all connections are tight and
that the shut-off valve is fully opened. The pressure
gauge must
be
installed between the pump and
