FRONT SUSPENSION AND STEERING LINKAGE

TORSION BAR
The torsion bars are
not
interchangeable side for
side. The bars are marked either right
or left by an
"R" or an "L" stamped on one end of the bar.
Removal
(1) Remove the upper control arm rebound bumper.
(2) If the vehicle is to be raised on a hoist, make
sure it is lifted on the body only so that the front
suspension is in full rebound (under no load). If the
vehicle is to be raised on jacks, placed under the cen-
ter of the crossmember
it
will be necessary that,
a
support first be placed between the crossmember and
the jack.
(3) Release all load from the torsion bar (Fig. 4) by
turning the anchor adjusting bolt (Fig. 5) counter-
clockwise.
(4) Remove the lock ring and plug from the torsion
bar rear anchor (Fig. 4).
(5) Using Tool C-3728, remove the torsion bar (Fig.
5) from
its anchors. It is advisable to place Tool
C-3728 toward the rear of the torsion bar to allow
sufficient room for striking the striking pad of the
tool.
Do not apply heat to the torsion bar, front an-
chor or rear anchor.
(6)
Remove the tool and slide the rear anchor bal-
loon seal from the anchor to facilitate removal of the
torsion bar.
(7) Remove the torsion bar by sliding the bar out
through the rear of the anchor. Use care not to dam-
age the balloon seal when it is removed from the tor-
sion bar.
Inspection
(1) Inspect the balloon seal for damage and replace
if necessary.
(2) Inspect the torsion bar for scores and nicks.
Dress down all scratches and nicks to remove the
sharp edges, then paint the repaired area with a good
rust preventative.
(3) Remove all foreign material from the hex open-
ings in the anchors and from the hex ends of the
torsion bars.
(4) Inspect the adjusting bolt and swivel for corro-
sion or other damage and if necessary replace. Lubri-
cate for easy operation.
Installation
(1) Insert the torsion bar through the rear anchor.
(2) Slide the balloon seal over the torsion bar

(1) Raise the vehicle so the front suspension is in
full rebound.
(2) Remove all load from the torsion bars by turn-
ing the adjusting bolts counterclockwise.
(3) Remove the lock rings from the rear anchors.
(4) Remove the nuts, two each side, attaching the
torsion bar rear anchor crossmember to the isolators.
(5) Remove the crossmember from the torsion bars.
(6)
Remove the nuts attaching the rubber isolator
assembly to the engine rear support crossmember
and remove the isolator assembly.
Installation (Fig. 41
The rubber isolator and mounting bracket is serv-
iced as an assembly only.
(1) Position the isolator assembly on the engine
rear support crossmember bolts and install the nuts.
Tighten the nuts 30 foot-pounds.
(2) Position the torsion bar anchor crossmember
over the hex ends of the torsion bars and the rubber
isolator attaching bolts. Install the nuts and tighten
to
50
foot-pounds.
(3) Install the lock rings in the rear anchors.

Place a load on the torsion bars by turning the

Removal
(1) Remove the upper control arm rebound bump-
er.
(2)
Raise vehicle so the front suspension is in full
rebound (under no load).
(3) Remove the wheel, tire and drum as an as-
sembly.
(4) Remove all load from the torsion bar by turning
the adjusting bolt counterclockwise.
(5)
Remove the upper ball joint stud from the
steering knuckle using Tool C-3711 (on
Fury
Models
use Tool C-3964).
