Description
The rear springs are of the semi-elliptic type with
rubber bushings in the "eye" of each end of the main
leaf.
The front ends of the springs are attached to
mounting brackets bolted to the body. The rear ends
of the springs are attached to the body by flat plate
shackles and rubber bushings. On station wagon mod-
els (except AV models) offset shackle plates are used.
The springs are attached to the rear axle housing
spring seats by "U" bolts. Zinc interleaves are used
between the spring leaves on AR and

equipped with heavy duty suspension to help increase
spring life. Zinc interleaves are flat pieces of zinc or
metal to help cushion the spring leaves. They are
used between each leaf.
Double acting "Oriflow" shock absorbers are used
with rubber mounting bushings at each end of the
shock absorber.
Shock absorbers should only be replaced when they
have lost their resistance in one or both directions, if
they

SHOCK ABSORBER

Replace spring.
Replace spring main leaf, or spring as neces-
sary.
Tighten

bolt nuts to specifications.
Replace bushings and tighten shackle bolt nuts
to specifications.
Install new interliners.
(a) Tighten
"U"
bolt nuts to specifications.
(b) Replace spring and shock absorber.
(a) Replace bushings.
(b) Replace shock absorber.
(E) Bleed the shock absorber.
(a) Replace shock absorber.

SHOCK ABSORBERS
Front Shock Absorbers
Removal
The lower ends of the front shock absorber (Figs.
1,
2
and 3) are attached to the lower control arm by
means of holes in the side plates of the lower control
arm. The top of the shock absorber extends through

Remove the nut and washer from the upper
end of the piston rod. (Accessible from engine com-
partment).
(2) Raise the vehicle and remove the pivot bolt and
