Changing Adapter Settings
Using Alcatel Client
Alcatel Client is a small program (Windows service) that allows the Site Survey Tool to retrieve network
data from a WLAN adapter. Alcatel Client must be running whenever the Site Survey Tool is used.
Starting the Site Survey Tool also starts the Client if the Client is not running.
Alcatel Client provides a separate Properties dialog that can be used for starting and stopping the
Alcatel Client service and for enabling the writing of an Alcatel Client log file.
To open the Alcatel Client Properties dialog, click the Alcatel Client icon () in the Windows system tray.
If the Alcatel icon is not displayed, start the Client by selecting Start > Programs > Alcatel > Alcatel
Client.
The figure below shows the Alcatel Client Properties dialog on Windows XP.
If you need to manually view, start, or stop Windows service, right-click My Computer on the desktop,
and select Manage > Services and Applications > Services.
Note:
Client service is not running. A yellow exclamation mark means an error. Open the
Client Properties dialog to view error status.
Working with Configuration Profiles
Your WLAN adapter's configuration profile affects site surveys. For example, enabling only 802.11a
band in combo-adapter's Client Utility makes 802.11a the only available band in the Site Survey Tool as
well.
Open the standard WLAN adapter utility, such as Agere Wireless Client Manager, Atheros Client Utility,
or Cisco Aironet Client Monitor and create a suitable network profile for site surveys. For example,
Atheros Client Utility allows scanning only specific bands such as 802.11a or 802.11b, or both.
Depending on your adapter you may also need to provide valid security credentials to access the
network you are about to survey.
The figure below shows the Orinoco Wireless Client Manager.
