Site Survey Guidelines
This section provides practical guidelines for performing a site survey, analyzing the results, and
improving your network with the Site Survey Tool. Reference the following sections:

General Wireless LAN Setup Steps
1.
Define WLAN requirements (see
It is very important to define requirements at the beginning of the project. Re-engineering a
solution that does not meet the needs of users or applications can be difficult and costly.
2.
Design the WLAN (see
A good network design facilitates implementation by describing how the solution will work, i.e.
what components are necessary, where to place them, and how to configure them. The Site
Survey Tool helps you to create a good network design by helping to find the access point loca-
tions, channels, antenna types, and any existing 802.11 networks that may cause interference.
3.
Implement the WLAN (see manufacturer documentation).
Refer to the access point and other documentation to setup the Wireless LAN. Do not yet install
the access points permanently.
4.
Perform site survey (see
Once you have a working Wireless LAN, perform a complete Site Survey to make sure that the
access points are optimally placed and configured, and there is no interference.
5.
Improve the network based on results (see
Implement network changes based on the site survey analysis results. After the modifications,
when the network works well, install the access points or antennas permanently.
6.
Periodic Site Surveys (see
To avoid performance problems, it is recommended to conduct a site survey every 3 months
and always when changing the number of access points, their locations, channels, or antenna
directions.
Visual Site Inspection
If the facility or area is larger than a few rooms, it is recommended that you use a map diagram to help
plan AP locations, both manually and with the Site Survey Tool. By loading a map into the Site Survey
Tool, you'll enable the advanced map features like coverage areas and AP placement tip. The Site
Survey Tool supports BMP, PNG, and JPG image formats.
