8.8 Safety requirements for preservation

The preservation procedure includes surface preparation, coating with preservation
materials, paper marking and cutting, packing, and shall be carried out only by persons
aged 18 and older, who have undergone medical examination, have been properly in-
structed on labor and fire safety, and have received primary instructions on the working
place. Preservation premises and sections shall be separated from other production prem-
ises and equipped with supply-and-exhaust ventilation. Materials used for preservation are
combustible substances with flash point from 170 to 270oC, and shall comply with state
standards, technical specifications and have quality certificate.
The supplied preservation materials shall bear labels with material description. Per-
form preservation operations in special clothes and footwear and use individual protection
means. When performing preservation operations, observe personal hygiene rules, dry
clean special clothes in time, do not wash them in emulsions, solvents, kerosene. By the
degree of impact on human health, preservation materials are classified as those of moder-
ate hazard, so use recommended individual protection means while working with such ma-
terials.
Prolonged exposure to preservation oils, greases and liquids may injure the skin.
White spirit vapors in small concentrations act as a weak drug, large concentration may re-
sult in poisoning. Anticorrosion paper contains corrosion inhibitors causing irritation and in-
flammation of skin, mucosa of nose and eyes. Before starting work, it is required to put on
cotton overalls, robe or an apron, prepare individual protection means depending on work
conditions and toxicity of substances to be used. Grease hands with protection paste
(cream) or put on cotton and rubber gloves. Before starting work, safe conditions of which
are not known, ask for safety instructions training.
