9: Location

Most AirLink devices are equipped with location tracking to ascertain their position
and track the movements of a vehicle or other devices that move. The AirLink gateway
relays the information of its location as well as other data for use with tracking
applications.
Note: Location is disabled by default in the AirLink RV50 Series. To enable it, see
Location Service
Common Uses for Location
Driver navigation—The AirLink gateway provides real time location data via the
serial or Ethernet port to a local application, including applications that provide
mapping and navigation support.
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL)—The AirLink gateway provides real time
location data to the server that tracks the location and other variables of the
vehicle or asset.
ALEOS Supported Location Report
Protocols
Remote Access Protocol (RAP)
RAP is a proprietary binary message format developed and maintained by Sierra
Wireless and used by many 3rd party applications. Because it is designed and
maintained by Sierra Wireless, RAP supports more ALEOS features than other
location protocols. It is a low-byte-usage protocol that can be used to develop low
cost AVL solutions.
The RAP messages are in hex and are referred to by their message ID. Reports
can include location data alone, as well as location data with the date and time,
radio frequency data, radio status information, and I/O state changes, and power
state changes. For an example, see
page 239. For more information, contact your Sierra Wireless Sales representa-
tive for information on how to obtain a copy of the RAP Protocol Guide.
National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA
NMEA is an ASCII protocol used by many location tracking applications.

Trimble
ASCII Interface Protocol (TAIP)
TAIP is a digital communication interface based on printable ASCII characters
over a serial data link. TAIP was designed specifically for vehicle tracking applica-
tions but has become common in a number of other applications, such as data ter-
minals and portable computers, because of its ease of use.
