OIL IN COOLING CIRCUIT
The following must be carried out if oil is found
contaminating the cooling system:
Find the source of the oil leakage
Check for:
- Defective
oil
cooler
(above
oil
filter)
if
equipped.
Cracked cylinder block (See Engine Section)
Cracked or warped cylinder head (See Engine
Section)
Automatic
transmission cooler
leak (if the
contaminant is transmission fluid)
Cleaning An Oil Contaminated Cooling System
(After source of leakage is repaired)
This may be accomplished using a solution of
water
and
a grease
emulsifying
liquid
dishwashing
detergent
such as Dawn@. The
procedure for cleaning is as follows:
1. Drain and refill the system with clean water
(no antifr$eze) allowing space to add 8-12 oz.
of Dawn
liquid
dishwashing
soap or an
equivalent
grease emulsifying
liquid
dish
soap.
2. Run the engine for approximately 5 minutes
at operating
temperature
to
thoroughly
circulate the solution.
3. Drain the system and allow the engine to
cool.
4. Refill the system with clean water only and
rinse by running the engine at operating
- temperature for 5 minutes. Then drain the
system.
S. Repeat steps 1-4 until all traces of oil are
eliminated.
6. Perform
an additional
rinse to
ensure
removal of soap residue.
7. Fill system with a 50/50 mixture of water and
antifreeze/coolant.
8. Bleed air from the system and recheck level
(Refer to "Bleeding"
- pg. E-6).
