Planning an IP-DECT system
Always involve the client in the site survey and the decision-making process for siting of
base stations. Inform the client about the problems that you encounter such as a difficult
area to cover. Ensure that the client does not face uncovered issues later.
Discuss with the client whether to install the base stations visibly or out of sight. If the base
stations must be out of sight, explore the possibility of installing the base stations with
antennas pointing to the ceiling. In this position, ventilation ducts, metal panels, or other
obstacles on the ceiling do not obstruct the base station. If the base stations must be
visible, install the base station at a location where disruption by obstacles above the ceiling
or behind walls is minimal.
Pay particular attention to nonstandard areas such as toilet rooms, stairwells, lifts, and
maintenance shafts.
Always mount a base station at least 30 cm away from a metal wall, to avoid a substantial
impedance change for the antennas.
Always try to place the base station in a way that it can "see" as much as possible of the
area to be covered.
Locate the base stations so that minimum obstacles exist between the base station and
the coverage area.
Place the base station strategically. For example, do not place the base station on a large
concrete pillar in the middle of a hall as coverage behind the pillar will be poor.
For outdoor coverage, mount a base station on a wall with a window. Place the base
station with antennas in front of the window or in a way that the base station can see as
much as possible of the outdoor area.
Do not place base stations near the outer walls of the building as this reduces effective
coverage inside the buidling. Place base stations near the outer walls of the building only
for outdoor coverage.
Discuss with the client the expected traffic capacity during the site survey. For example,
the number of persons in a particular department, the number of calls made on an
average, and the length of such calls on and average. Follow a thumb rule of one base
station for 27 persons. If you are dealing with a high-volume center such as a purchase
department, the ratio will change.
Ensure a minimum space of 30 cms between two base stations.
Ensure extra length of cable, 5 to 10 meters, for each base station so that you can move
the base station, if required.
