USING VOIP

A TalkSwitch VoIP network provides inter-branch connectivity. It requires a VoIP-enabled
TalkSwitch unit at each location. A TalkSwitch VoIP network has 50 VoIP numbers (250–299)
that can be dialed from an extension or auto attendant. The TalkSwitch unit automatically finds
the VoIP lines for placing these calls.
Other VoIP calls are made by dialing a hunt group. If a VoIP-enabled TalkSwitch unit is present,
hunt group 88 provides access to the TalkSwitch VoIP network by default. Refer to the VoIP
Network Configuration Guide. It tells you how to set up a TalkSwitch profile or service provider
profile, set up VoIP numbers that use the profile, and set up the hunt group. Dialing the hunt
group at the internal dial tone tells the TalkSwitch system to hunt for an available VoIP line.
A VoIP-enabled TalkSwitch unit is required for teleworkers to use external IP extensions. The
external IP extensions are local extensions, and function like internal IP extensions at
the office.
Example: You have three branch locations (San Francisco, New York, Miami).
Location 1: San Francisco
Twelve VoIP numbers (250–261) are assigned to four VoIP lines.
Location 2: New York
Four VoIP numbers (270–273) are assigned to four VoIP lines.
Location 3: Miami
Four VoIP numbers (280–283) are assigned to four VoIP lines.
If someone in the San Francisco office wants to reach someone in the New York office, they can
dial one of the VoIP numbers associated with New York (270–273). TalkSwitch automatically
finds an available VoIP line and connects to the New York location. The TalkSwitch unit at the
New York location handles the call according to the configuration in the VoIP Numbers page.

USING A STANDARD PHONE CONNECTED IN PARALLEL TO TALKSWITCH

A standard phone connected in parallel (not connected to TalkSwitch but connected to the same
line) with TalkSwitch always rings at least once before TalkSwitch starts ringing its extensions or
the auto attendant answers the call. TalkSwitch uses the first ring to identify the incoming ring
pattern before passing it on to the extensions or the auto attendant (TalkSwitch determines if
the call is a distinctive ring and detects any caller ID information). A parallel phone can
interrupt a telephone call on any of the telephone lines.

Making and receiving calls

Make calls on parallel-connected extensions as if TalkSwitch were not sharing the telephone line
with them.
If you answer on a parallel-connected phone before the auto attendant engages, TalkSwitch
takes no further action. If a call is answered on a parallel-connected phone after the auto
attendant engages, you can turn off the auto attendant message by pressing **0 at one of the
TalkSwitch extensions, or let it time-out on its own, in which case you will hear: "Good-bye".
