Blood Volume Calculations for Containers
The contents of the red cell, in-process and plasma containers
vary during the course of a procedure. Therefore, it is necessary
to weigh the containers and use the following calculations to
estimate any blood loss. Container tare weights are included with
the kit's directions for use.
Total Plasma in Plasma Container (mL):
[Total Container Weight (g) – Container Tare Weight (g)]
Red Cells and Plasma in Red Cell Container (mL):
[Total Container Weight (g) – Container Tare Weight (g)]
To determine the red cell content of the red cell container,
multiply the value obtained in the equation above by 85%. It is
estimated that the hematocrit of the contents of the red cell
container is approximately 80% to 85%.
Whole Blood in In-Process Container (mL):
[Total Container Weight (g) – Container Tare Weight (g)]
To determine the red cell content of the in-process container,
multiply the value obtained in the equation above by the donor's
hematocrit.
To determine the total volume of the contents of the red cell
storage containers, weigh each container separately and use the
following equation:
Total Volume of Red Cell Storage Container (mL):
[Total Container Weight (g) – Container Tare Weight (g)]
Note: For the A
RBC/Plasma procedure, if the procedure
LYX
ends unexpectedly prior to the second draw, estimate the whole
blood loss to be 450 mL. Use the donor's hematocrit to calculate
total plasma and red cell loss.
