2RBC Single Unit Recovery
(SUR)
The following instructions may be used to recover a single or
double red cell product if an interruption in the 2RBC-LR or
2RBC-NLR collection procedure occurs and the procedure has to
be terminated. The red cells already collected may be recovered
if the following conditions are met:
• Single Unit Recovery/Double Unit Lower Limits
Enabled
• Sufficient whole blood volume has been drawn based on
the donor's hematocrit/hemoglobin.

system automatically performs an internal calculation

to determine if there is sufficient volume to allow processing, and
whether this volume fulfills the allowable red cell requirements
for a recovered double or single unit. The red cells and plasma
can be returned to the donor if these conditions are not met, and
if the ability to return to the donor is an option.
If the procedure has been terminated with a collected red cell
volume that meets the 2RBC minimum absolute red cell volume
for the procedure (defined via Administrative Settings), the
collected red cells will be processed as a double unit. The
Procedure Information Screen will display a product exemption
message to inform the operator that the product needs to be
checked. Testing should be performed to check absolute red cell
content/volume for product acceptability per institutional
guidelines. Refer to either Chapter 4A or 4C, "Performing Post-
Collection Processing".
Note: The 2RBC minimum absolute red cell target volume in
the US is 360 mL, and the collection tolerance is ±10%.
Therefore, a US recovered double unit collection should have a
collected absolute red cell volume of at least 324 mL (360 mL –
10%).
If the conditions are not met for the double unit recovered
collection, but are met for the Single Unit Recovery (SUR)
collection, the instrument will collect a single unit. The Procedure
Information Screen will display a product exemption message to
inform the operator that the product needs to be checked.
Testing should be performed to check absolute red cell
content/volume for product acceptability per institutional
guidelines.
