multiple safety features to enhance the safety and comfort of
donors. The following list describes some of the safety features
built into the instrument's hardware and software.
STOP button. Pushing the STOP button pauses the instrument
by closing all valves, stopping all pumps, and stopping the
centrifuge. The button also immediately closes the donor safety
clamp and deflates the pressure cuff.
Donor safety clamp. The instrument has a spring-loaded donor
safety clamp that isolates the donor from the instrument. The
clamp is held open by the instrument's automated operating
system during operation. The clamp closes and obstructs the
fluid return path to the donor when an alarm sounds, when the
STOP button is pushed, or when power to the instrument is lost.
Air detectors. Ultrasonic air detectors monitor for the presence
of air in the donor line. If air is detected, the system stops any
fluid return immediately. The air detector periodically initiates a
self-check during the procedure to verify the sensors are
functioning properly.
Leak detector. The instrument has a leak detector that is
located along the bottom of the centrifuge compartment. It uses
conductivity between 2 metallic strips to detect the presence of
fluid. An alarm is triggered if the instrument detects a possible
leak condition.
Plasma (optical) sensor. The plasma sensor monitors the
turbidity and color of the plasma leaving the separation chamber.
A change in plasma color may indicate hemolysis (red plasma) or
the presence of red cells, which would cause an alarm to trigger.
Battery back-up system. If primary electrical power to the
instrument is lost, the battery back-up system automatically
supplies power to the instrument. Alarms are triggered and
limited options are made available (standby, process product, or
end procedure); however, the instrument will not allow collection
to continue unless there is a return to primary electrical power.
Visual and audible alarm clues. The instrument provides both
visual and audible alarm clues to alert the operator to an alarm
condition that requires attention.
Anticoagulant (AC) rate delivery monitoring. The instrument
monitors the amount of anticoagulant returned to the donor to
ensure donor safety and comfort. If the instrument detects an
inappropriate rate or an unexpected loss of weight on the
