WARNING: The operator should constantly monitor any
manual reinfusion. The air detector does not function
during manual fluid return.
10. Open the roller clamp on the recipient set line attached to
the injection site. Ensure that the recipient set roller clamp
leading to the injection site is fully opened.
11. Open the roller clamp on the saline side of the recipient set.
Establish a saline drip to the donor by opening the saline
clamp.
12. Open the roller clamp to the blood component side of the
recipient set. Allow the contents of the blood component
container to drain back to the donor until a small amount is
left in the container.
13. Close the roller clamp.
CAUTION: Higher hematocrit blood in the red cell container
may require increasing the saline flow to improve the rate of
manual reinfusion.
14. To reinfuse the contents of another component container:
a.
Close the "Y" set roller clamps at both "Y" sites.
b.
Apply a clamp above the first component container
port.
c.
Remove the spike to the first component container.
d.
Aseptically reinsert it in the second component
container port.
15. Proceed with the second component reinfusion in the same
manner as above.
16. When the reinfusion is complete, close the roller clamps on
the recipient set and clamp the donor line on the disposable
kit near the needle.
17. Remove the needle from the donor's arm. Follow
appropriate institutional guidelines for venipuncture care.
Note: If the original donor vein access has been compromised,
this procedure may be followed using a new venipuncture site,
rather than entering the donor line injection sampling site on the
kit.
