6.8 Possible Hydrostatic Power Steering Malfunctions and Directions for their
Remedy
The list of the hydrostatic power steering possible malfunctions and directions for
their remedy is specified in Table 6.8.1.

Malfunction, evidence, reason
There is no oil pressure or such
pressure is insufficient in the dis-
charge hydraulic line of the steering
control (when the steering wheel is
rotated up to stop, the pressure
shall be from 14.5 to 15.5 MPa) be-
cause of following reasons:
- the HPS hydraulic system is not
pumped.
- incorrect setting of the metering
pump safety valve (low pressure).
- feeding pump is faulty (the pump
does not provides pressure be-
cause of low volumetric perfor-
mance).
Excessive friction or seizure in the
steering column mechanical ele-
ments.
Increased torque to rotate the FDA
reduction gears.
The steering wheel rotates without steerable wheels turning
There is no oil in the tank.
Incorrectly adjusted valves of the
metering pump. Set pressure of the
safety valve is higher than set pres-
sure of the anti-shock valves.
Worn sealing of the steering hydrau-
lic cylinder piston.
High force is required at the steering wheel
Pump the HPS hydraulic system by rotating the
steering wheel with movement of guiding wheels
from extreme left into extreme right position (from
one extreme position into another) for 2-3 times.
Contact the dealer. It is necessary to adjust the safety
valve to required pressure
performed by the service provider.
Contact the dealer. The pump does not provides
pressure because of low volumetric performance.
To remove friction in the steering column, proceed
as follows:
- loosen the upper nut;
- lubricate the friction surfaces of the plastic bush-
ings;
- eliminate the contact between the cardan forks
and the steering column bracket walls.
Repair the FDA.
Fill the tank by oil up to required level and pump the
HPS hydraulic system.
Contact the dealer. It is necessary to adjust the
safety and anti-shock valves to required pressure.
This operation shall be performed by the service
provider.
Repair or replace the hydraulic cylinder.
