Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning - Edition 04.2013
WARNING
♦ The bolts of the connec‐
tion point may only be
loosened when the refrig‐
erant circuit has been
discharged.
❑ For loosening connection points of refrigerant lines, refer to
⇒ "15.8 Connection Points of Refrigerant Lines, Loosening and Assembling ", page 262
❑ Routing of refrigerant lines to evaporator in rear A/C unit. Refer to
⇒ "11.1 Incorporation of Rear A/C Unit into Vehicle Refrigerant- and Coolant Circuit", page 203
15.3
Refrigerant Lines, Disconnecting from
Compressor and Connecting
Note
Compressor is always driven when engine is running; there is
no magnetic clutch. Engine is therefore not to be started un‐
less refrigerant circuit has been properly assembled. If for
example the refrigerant lines are not connected to the com‐
pressor and the engine is started then the compressor may be
destroyed by the build-up of internal heat.
Seal open pipes and connections at compressor with suitable
caps (to prevent ingress of dirt and moisture).
Do not bend, kink or stretch lines or hoses as refrigerant lines
and refrigerant hoses may be damaged.
Removing
– Discharge the refrigerant circuit. Refer to ⇒ A/C System with
Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant Circuit (A/C Sys‐
tem with Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant Circuit, Using Service
Station).
– Remove the noise insulation (not on vehicles with 8-cylinder
TDI engine). Refer to ⇒ Body Exterior; Rep. Gr. 66 .
– Remove the air filter housing upper section and the air intake
for the turbocharger (vehicles with a 12-cylinder TDI engine).
Refer to ⇒ Fuel Injection and Preglow System, 12-Cylinder
TDI; Rep. Gr. 23 and
⇒ "16.3 Compressor, Removing and Installing (Vehicles with
12-Cylinder TDI Engine)", page 280
Note
On a 12-cylinder TDI engine, the refrigerant lines -A- and -B- can
be removed from the top because there is enough space with the
air filter housing upper section removed.
– If necessary, disconnect the electrical connection to the Re‐
frigerant Temperature Sensor - G454- (if present) at harness
connector. Refer to
⇒ "15.5 Refrigerant Temperature Sensor G454 , Removing
and Installing", page 255
