Note
Dryer cartridge is installed in condenser receiver/dryer and
can currently be replaced without removing the condenser.
The receiver/dryer collects the fluid drops and then directs
them in an uninterrupted stream to the expansion valve. Mois‐
ture which has entered the refrigerant circuit during repairs will
be collected by the dryer cartridge in the receiver/dryer.
From MY 2006, condensers are to be introduced as a running
change (no definite time period for running change and cur‐
rently only for specific models) on which the receiver/dryer with
dryer cartridge is fastened to the condenser (similar as on the
Audi A3 from MY 2004. Refer to ⇒ Heating and Air Condi‐
tioning; Rep. Gr. 87 Audi A3 from MY 2004). For the time
being, these receiver/dryer can be replaced only when con‐
denser has been removed. Replace the O-ring seals -A- and
-B- (for the correct version, refer to the Parts Catalog) with the
receiver/dryer and tighten the bolts in the connection area to
10 Nm.
Removing
– Discharge the refrigerant circuit. Refer to ⇒ A/C System with
Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant Circuit (A/C Sys‐
tem with Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant Circuit, Using Service
Station).
– Remove the cover above the water cooler (top radiator cover).
Refer to ⇒ Body Exterior; Rep. Gr. 50 .
Additional work on vehicles with 12 cylinder engine
– Remove the upper radiator cover and fan shroud with coolant
fans. Refer to ⇒ Engine Mechanical; Rep. Gr. 19 .
– Loosen the radiator (water cooler) and the condenser from the
lock carrier and pivot these components with the coolant ho‐
ses and lines connected as far downward as possible (disen‐
gage and tilt, do not remove the radiator, do not open cooling
circuit). Refer to
⇒ "15.7 Condenser, Removing and Installing", page 258
⇒ Engine Mechanical; Rep. Gr. 19 .

WARNING
Danger due to refrigerant coming out under pressure.
Danger of frost bite to skin and other parts of the body.
• Extract the refrigerant and immediately open the refriger‐
ant circuit after that.
• If the refrigerant was extracted more than 10 minutes in
the past and the refrigerant circuit was not opened, extract
the refrigerant again. Pressure in the refrigerant circuit is
caused by evaporation.
