Refrigerant and Refrigerant Oil Ca‐
pacities
Refrigerant R134a and refrigerant oil capacities. Refer to ⇒ A/C
System with Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant R134a
Capacities, Refrigerant Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil (A/C
System with Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant R134a Capacities,
Refrigerant Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil).
– Evacuate the refrigerant circuit and fill it. Refer to ⇒ A/C Sys‐
tem with Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant Circuit
(A/C System with Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant Circuit, Us‐
ing Service Station).
– Operate the A/C system after filling the refrigerant circuit. Re‐
fer to
⇒ "21 A/C System, Operating after Filling Refrigerant Circuit",
page 332
.
Note
Different capacities for refrigerant R134a and refrigerant oil
are designated, depending on refrigerant circuit design (with
one or two A/C units/evaporators). Refer to the Parts Catalog
and ⇒ A/C System with Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ;
Refrigerant R134a Capacities, Refrigerant Oil and Approved
Refrigerant Oil (A/C System with Refrigerant R134a; Refrig‐
erant R134a Capacities, Refrigerant Oil and Approved Refrig‐
erant Oil).
The compressor as a replacement part has different refriger‐
ant oil fill capacities, therefore note the exact part number.
Refer to the Parts Catalog and ⇒ A/C System with Refrigerant
R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant R134a Capacities, Refrig‐
erant Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil (A/C System with
Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant R134a Capacities, Refrigerant
Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil). The reason for the different
refrigerant oil capacities in the compressor lies in the design
of the compressor itself, note these refrigerant oil capacities.
Too much oil in the circuit leads to higher pressures and re‐
duces cooling performance of the system. Too little refrigerant
oil may lead to lubrication problems in the compressor.
When charging the A/C system, always use maximum amount
of refrigerant R134a, as some of the refrigerant remains in the
hose of the refrigerant recovery, recycling and recharging unit.
Refrigerant circuit may only be filled with approved refrigerant
oils. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Zexel/Valeo, Sanden and Denso compressors require differ‐
ent refrigerant oils. Refer to ⇒ A/C System with Refrigerant
R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; Refrigerant R134a Capacities, Refrig‐
erant Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil (A/C System with
Refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant R134a Capacities, Refrigerant
Oil and Approved Refrigerant Oil) and the Parts Catalog.
Use only the specified oil from a sealed container (PAG oil
absorbs moisture). Do not use oil if it is contaminated with
moisture or if oil container has been left open. Refer to ⇒ A/C
System with Refrigerant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; A/C System
General Information (A/C System with Refrigerant R134a; A/
C System General Information).
For additional information, refer to ⇒ A/C System with Refrig‐
erant R134a; Rep. Gr. 87 ; A/C System General Information
(A/C System with Refrigerant R134a; A/C System General In‐
formation).
