Note
If the belt pulley overload protection activates, check the A/C
compressor for ease of movement before replacing the belt
pulley. If the A/C compressor creates friction, replace it com‐
pletely.
To remove belt pulley, it depends on engine version if it is
necessary to remove A/C compressor from engine. Depend‐
ing on the engine version, the A/C compressor can be re‐
moved and re-installed from the auxiliary components bracket
without opening the refrigerant lines.
For example, on a vehicle with a 6-cylinder engine, the A/C
compressor can be removed and installed at the bracket with‐
out opening the refrigerant lines. Refer to
⇒ "3.7 Compressor on Bracket, Removing and Installing",
page 27
.
Belt pulley is made of plastic and is sensitive to impact, there‐
fore handle it with especial care.
Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt using chalk or felt-tip
marker before removing. Running a used belt in the opposite
direction could destroy it.
If the drive plate -C- overload protection activates, rotate the
pulley -E- using the outer part of the drive plate -C- so that the
A/C compressor shaft -B- and the hexagon head on the drive
plate -D- (inner part of the drive plate -C-) do not rotate.
The belt pulley and the drive plate are held together with one
bolt (when the bolt is no longer needed, dispose of it). Refer
to the Parts Catalog.
When the bolt was manufactured, a predetermined amount of
a specific grease was applied to the threads in the drive plate;
this amount is sufficient for bolting the drive plate to the A/C
compressor one time (a drive plate, which has been removed,
cannot be reused).
Depending on the version of the engine, it may be necessary
to bring the lock carrier -C- into the service position (pulled
approximately 10 cm forward) so there is enough space to re‐
move the belt pulley. Refer to ⇒ Body Exterior; Rep. Gr. 50 ;
Body Front .
Removing
– Remove the noise insulation on vehicles with a 6-cylinder en‐
gine or a 12-cylinder TDI engine. Refer to ⇒ Body Exterior;
Rep. Gr. 66 ; Underbody Trim Panels .
– Move the lock carrier -C- into the service position (for example,
on a 12-cylinder TDI engine). Refer to ⇒ Body Exterior; Rep.
Gr. 50 ; Body Front .
– Release tension on ribbed belt and remove it. Refer to ⇒ En‐
gine Mechanical; Rep. Gr. 13 ; Cylinder Block, Belt Pulley
Side .
– If necessary, remove the power steering pump (only on vehi‐
cles with a 6-cylinder gasoline engine). Refer to ⇒ Suspen‐
sion, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr. 48 ; Power Steering Pump,
Hydraulic Pipes and Reservoir .
