Issue 02 (2014-09-30)
Objective
To adjust BGP route
convergence speed.
To accelerate the
EBGP session fault
detection and route
convergence.

convergence speed.

Feature
Multiple timers are
used in maintaining
BGP neighbor
relationships. The
timer values determine
the speed at which a
fault on the network is
detected, and BGP peer
relationships are
established after the
fault is rectified.
Rapid EBGP
connection reset allows
BGP to detect EBGP
link faults promptly,
delete the direct EBGP
session on an interface,
and reset the EBGP
session on another
interface.
BGP peer tracking can
speed up BGP route
convergence by
adjusting the interval
between peer
unreachability
discovery and
connection
interruption.
8 BGP Configuration
Note
Keeping the default
values of timers is
recommended because
modifying the timer
values may interrupt
BGP peer
relationships.
Rapid EBGP
connection reset is
applicable to EBGP
peers only.
Bidirectional
forwarding detection
(BFD) for BGP can
also speed up fault
detection and route
convergence.
However, BFD for
BGP needs to be
deployed on the entire
network and has poor
extensibility. If BFD
for BGP cannot be
deployed on the
network, BGP peer
tracking is
recommended because
it is simple to deploy
and has better
extensibility.
