8.24 Disabling the BGP-IPv4 Unicast Address Family

If you do not need to use BGP to transmit public IPv4 unicast routes, you can disable the BGP-
IPv4 unicast address family to reduce the consumption of system resources.
Applicable Environment
By default, peers in the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family are automatically enabled. After you
configure the peer as-number command in the BGP view, the peer enable command is
automatically configured in the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family view. Peers in other address
family views must be manually enabled.
When you do not need to use BGP to transmit public IPv4 unicast routes, disable the BGP-IPv4
unicast address family. For example, in an IP RAN scenario, BGP is used only to transmit VPNv4
routes rather than public IPv4 unicast routes between superstratum Provider Edges (SPEs) and
underlayer Provider Edges (UPEs). To reduce the consumption of system resources, you can
disable the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family. In addition, one SPE is connected to multiple UPEs
in most cases, and it is complex to disable the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family on all UPEs one
by one. To address this problem, disable the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family in the BGP view.
Pre-configuration Task
Before you disable the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family, configure link-layer protocol
parameters and IP addresses for interfaces to ensure that the link layer protocol of each interface
is Up.
Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view
The system view is displayed.
Step 2 Run:
bgp { as-number-plain | as-number-dot }
The BGP view is displayed.
Step 3 Run:
undo default ipv4-unicast
The BGP-IPv4 unicast address family is disabled.
----End
Issue 02 (2014-09-30)
NOTE
After you configure the undo default ipv4-unicast command:
l New peers are not enabled in the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family by default. The peers that have
already been specified are not affected.
l To enable the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family for a specified BGP peer, run the peer enable command
in the BGP view or the BGP-IPv4 unicast address family view.
