3. T o free w indshield rubber channel o f w eatherstrip loosen
the lip of the w indshield w eatherstrip from the pinchw eld
flange along the top and at the sides by applying pressure
w ith palm o f the hand to the edge o f the glass. A t the
same tim e assist the lip o f the rubber w eatherstrip
channel over the pinchw eld flange w ith a flat bladed tool
such as a tongue depressor, or shaped m ycarta blade
(fig. 4).

Checking Windshield Opening

Due to the expanse and co n to u r o f the w indshield it is
im perative in the event o f a strain break th a t the windshield
opening be thoroughly checked before installing a replacem ent
w indshield. The replacem ent glass is used as a tem plate.
1. C heck for the following conditions at th e previous
m arked p o in t o f fracture,
a.
C hipped edges on glass.

Irregularities in body opening.
c.
Irregularities in rubber channel w eatherstrip.
Remove all sealer from flange and body around w ind­
shield opening.
Check flange area for solder, weld high spots, or hardened
spot-weld sealer. Remove all high spots.
Check windshield glass to opening, by supporting glass
w ith six spacers contained in packet J-22577 (Fig. 5).
C A U T IO N :
Do not strike glass against body metal.
Chipped edges on the glass can lead to future breaks.
N O T E :
It is necessary to m o d ify the spacers by
cutting o ff 3 /1 6 " fro m the back of the spacer w ith a
knife (Fig. 6).
5. W ith the windshield supported and centered in its open­
ing, check the relationship o f the glass to the body
opening flange around the entire perim eter o f the glass
(Fig. 7).
6. Check the relationship of glass to opening as follows:
a.
Inside edge o f glass to bo d y flange.
b.
O uter edge o f glass to parallel body metal.
7. M ark areas o f body m etal or flange to be reform ed,
remove glass and correct as necessary.
8. Recheck w indshield in its opening and if satisfactory
proceed as follows.
Installation
C A U T IO N :
Always wear gloves when handling
glass.
1. A pply sealer to w eatherstrip and install on glass.
2. Install a cord around periphery o f w eatherstrip, leaving a
loop at the top and the loose ends at the b o tto m as
show n in Figure 8.
