SERVICE IG N IT IO N SYSTEM
1.
Remove distributor cap, clean cap and inspect for cracks,
carbon tracks and burned or corroded term inals. Replace
cap where necessary (Fig. 3).
2.
Clean ro to r and inspect for damage or deterioration.
Replace ro to r where necessary.
3.
Replace brittle, oil soaked or dam aged spark plug wires.
Install all wires to proper spark plug. Proper positioning
o f spark plug wires in supports is im p o rtan t to prevent
cross-firing.
4.
Tighten all ignition system connections.
5.
Replace or repair any wires th at are frayed, loose or
dam aged.
6
. Check the distributor centrifugal advance m echanism by
turning the distributor ro to r in a clockwise direction as
far as possible, then releasing the ro to r to see if the
springs return it to their retarded position. If the ro to r
does n o t return readily, the d istributor m ust be dis
assembled and the cause o f the trouble corrected.
7. Check to see th a t the vacuum control operates freely by
turning the movable breaker plate counterclockw ise to
see if the spring returns to its retarded position. Any
stiffness in the operation o f the vacuum control will

distributor points and clean or replace if
necessary.
•
C ontact points w ith an overall gray color and only
slight roughness or pitting need n ot be replaced.
•
D irty points should be cleaned w ith a clean point
file.
Use only a few strokes o f a clean, fine-cut
contact file. The file should n ot be used on other
m etals and should n ot be allowed to becom e greasy
or dirty. Never use em ery cloth or sandpaper to
clean contact points since particles will em bed and
cause arcing and rapid burning o f points. Do not
attem p t to remove all roughness nor dress the point
surfaces dow n sm ooth. Merely remove scale or dirt.
•
Clean cam lobe w ith cleaning solvent and rotate
cam lubricator wick 180° as applicable.
•
Replace points th a t are burned or badly pitted.
N O T E :
Where prem aturely burned or badly pitted
points are encountered, the ignition system and
engine should be checked to determine the cause o f
trouble so that it can be elim inated. Unless the
condition causing point burning or pitting is cor
rected, new points will provide no better service
than the old points. Refer to Section 6 Y fo r an
analysis of point burning or pitting.
