N O T E : I t may be necessary to move rotor slightly
to start gear into mesh w ith camshaft gear, but rotor
should line up w ith the m ark when distributor is
down in place.
2. Tighten th e distributor clamp b olt snugly and connect
vacuum line. C onnect prim ary wire to coil term inal and
install cap. Also install spark plug and high tension wires
if rem oved.
N O T E : I t is im portant th a t the spark plug wires be
installed in their proper location in the supports
(Figs. 10i and 11 i ).
3. Tim e ignition as previously described under Tune-Up in

Section .
Installation—Engine Disturbed (All Models)
1. L ocate No. 1 piston in firing position by either o f tw o
m ethods described below.
a. Remove No. 1 spark plug and, w ith finger on plug
hole, crank engine until com pression is felt in the
No. 1 cylinder. C ontinue cranking until tim ing m ark
on crankshaft pulley lines u p w ith tim ing tab
attached to engine fro n t cover.
b. Rem ove rocker cover (left ban k on V
crank engine u ntil No. 1 intake valve closes and
continue to crank slowly ab o u t 1/3 turn until
tim ing m ark on pulley lines up w ith tim ing tab.
2. Position d istribu tor to opening block in norm al installed
attitu d e (Figs. lOi and H i), noting position o f vacuum
control unit.
3. Position ro tor to point tow ard fro n t o f engine (w ith
d istributo r housing held in installed a ttitu d e ), then tu rn
ro to r counterclockw ise approxim ately
tow ard left cylinder ban k and push d istributor dow n to
engine cam shaft. It m ay be necessary to ro tate ro to r
slightly u n til cam shaft engagem ent is felt.
4. While pressing firm ly dow n on d istributor housing, kick
starter over a few tim es to m ake sure oil pum p shaft is
engaged. Install hold-dow n clam p and bolt and snug up
b o lt.
5. T urn d istributor b o d y slightly until points ju st open and
tighten d istrib u to r clamp bolt.

. Place d istributor cap in position and check to see th a t
ro to r lines up w ith term inal for No. 1 spark plug.
-8 7. Install cap, check all high tension wire connections and
engines) and
connect spark plug wires if th ey have been rem oved. It is
im p o rtan t th a t th e wires be installed in their location in
the supports.
N O T E :
correct installation. Wires must be installed as indi­
cated to prevent cross firing.
